Пьеса американского драматурга Трейси Леттса «Киллер Джо», на первый взгляд – всего лишь криминальный триллер, история маргинального семейства, в котором сын и отец решают убить мать, чтобы получить страховку и расплатиться с долгами. Вдобавок, наняв киллера («по совместительству» — местного шефа полиции), в качестве аванса они отдают ему единокровную дочь и сестру…

Мотивация конкретных персонажей не укладывается в рамки морали, но, волей автора, жизнь этих нелюдей – метафорический портрет всего человечества в целом. Отчего, созданные «по образу и подобию», мы склонны, поддаваясь меркантильным интересам, терять человеческое обличье, уничтожать себя и своих близких? Для чего пришли мы на этот свет, и не готовим ли мы сами себе апокалипсис?..
